Atharvaveda: Ancient Indian Medicine, Metallurgy, Mathematics, and Daily Life

Named after Maharshi Atharvan and Rishi Angiras, the Atharvaveda is the Veda of practical human welfare, applied sciences, engineering, and holistic medicine. Its 20 Kands contain 730 hymns addressing societal governance, health, plant science, and householder prosperity.

1. The Seedbed of Ayurveda & Herbal Medicine

The Atharvaveda is the direct predecessor of Ayurveda (the Science of Longevity). It details over 250 medicinal plants, botanical extractions, bone-setting formulas, and microbial treatments:

• Kustha & Jangida Herbs: Described as potent remedies against fevers (*Takman*) and skin afflictions.
• Krimi-Nashana: Hymns describing microscopic organisms (*Krimis*) causing disease and methods to neutralize them using sunlight, neem, and herbal fumigation.

2. Prithvi Sukta (12.1): The World’s First Ecological Charter

The 63 verses of the Prithvi Sukta in Atharvaveda form humanity's most majestic environmental charter:

माता भूमिः पुत्रो अहम् पृथिव्याः — "Earth is my Mother; I am her child."

It warns that humans must draw resources from nature responsibly without greed: "Whatever I dig from thee, O Earth, may that have quick growth again. O purifier, may we not injure thy vitals or thy heart!"

3. Metallurgy & Parisishtha Vedic Mathematics

The Atharvaveda references metals such as Ayas (iron/steel), Hiranya (gold), Rajata (silver), and Trapu (tin). Furthermore, the appendices (*Parisishtha*) of Atharvaveda preserved the 16 Sutras of Vedic Mathematics compiled by Swami Bharati Krishna Tirtha for rapid mental computation.
