Samaveda: The Birth of Indian Classical Music, Raga Swaras, and Chanted Mysticism

If the Rigveda is the lyric of knowledge, the Samaveda is its divine song. Composed of 1,875 verses set to intricate musical notes (*Swaras*), the Samaveda is the undisputed origin of Indian Classical Music, vocal ornamentation, and acoustic science.

1. Why Sri Krishna Praises Samaveda in the Gita

In Shrimad Bhagavad Gita (Chapter 10, Verse 22), Lord Krishna highlights the divine preeminence of the Samaveda among all scriptures:

वेदानां सामवेदोऽस्मि — "Among the Vedas, I am the Samaveda."

This is because Samaveda represents the highest synthesis of divine thought transformed into transcendent acoustic melody.

2. The Genesis of the Seven Swaras (Saptaswara)

Ancient Samavedic chanting introduced the 7 primary notes of Indian musical octave (*Saptaswara*):

1. Krushta / Shadja (Sa): The fundamental note, inspired by the peacock’s call.
2. Prathama / Rishabha (Re): Inspired by the bull’s bellow.
3. Dvitiya / Gandhara (Ga): Inspired by the goat’s bleat.
4. Tritiya / Madhyama (Ma): Inspired by the heron’s cry.

The Samaveda text is split into two parts:

• Purvarchika & Uttararchika: The core verse collections arranged according to deities (Agni, Indra, Soma).
