Brahmagupta: Ancient Indian astronomer and mathematician. Brahmagupta lived in India between 598 and 668 AD. Brahmagupta was born in 598 CE in Bhinmal city in the state of Rajasthan of northwest India.
He was an Indian mathematician and astronomer. He first used zero as a number. He was the author of two early works on mathematics and astronomy: the Brāhmasphuṭasiddhānta
He was the first to say that multiplying two negative numbers together gives a positive number. He gave the solution of a general linear equation.
He gave two solutions to the general quadratic equation. He found the Pythagoras triple. He discovered many other things in math.
He formulated the Brahmagupta Sutra: In summary:
- A debt minus zero is a…Debt.
- A fortune minus zero is a…Fortune.
- Zero minus zero is a…Zero.
- A debt subtracted from zero is a…Fortune.
- A fortune subtracted from zero is a…Debt.
- The product of zero multiplied by a debt or fortune is…Zero.
His concept of 0 serves as the groundwork for physics, astronomy, Space Exploration, economics and architecture.
