There are different minerals embedded in the rocks making the crust of the earth. These minerals are not uniformly distributed across the area nor in depth. Thus, there are different types of minerals concentrated in different geographies.
India is rich mineral resources which are largely concentrated in following geographies –
North-Eastern Plateau region –
This region includes part of Jharkhand (Chhotanagpur area), the Odisha plateau, part Bengal and Chhattisgarh. This region has wide range of minerals, such as limestone, iron ore, coal, manganese, bauxite, and mica etc.
Western region –
The western region of India has abundant minerals. Rajasthan and Gujarat have huge reserves of salt. Rajasthan has rich deposits of construction material such as sandstone, granite, and marble. In addition to that large reserves of fuller earth and gypsum are also found here. Copper and Zinc area also found in this region. Dolomite and limestone used in cement industry are also abundantly found here. Mumbai and Gujarat have both oil and gas reserves.
Southern region –
This region covers Karnataka, Goa, and the part of Tamil Nadu, Kerala and Goa. This region has Bauxite and ferrous metals are in abundance. Other than that iron ore, manganese, coal and limestone in there. Kerala has monazite and thorium resources.
Northern or Himalayan region –
This region has deposits of copper, lead, zinc, cobalt, and tungsten reserves. Assam has mineral oil resources.
